Russia: AvtoVAZ to start fitting navigation systems with GLONASS receivers?

AvtoVAZ  may begin to equip their cars with GLONASS navigation systems from this year. A project is underway, whose first phase will include equipping GLONASS systems on 10-15 thousand cars on the assembly line in 2009.  The first phase of the project is estimated to cost several tens of millions of dollars.

Not surprisingly, the project is looking for government support, because such a “forced” installation of GLONASS will create a consumer market for domestic navigation system – a task that has not yet been solved by any other means of public incentives.

MTS launches indoor 3G in Moscow

Leading Russian operator Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) said this week that it has switched on its first phase 3G network in Moscow. The indoor network was launched in Expocentre, one of the largest exhibition centres in Eastern Europe, providing data download speeds of up to 3.6Mbps using HSPA.

MTS first launched commercial 3G services in Russia in the summer of 2008, and plans to launch 3G in 14 cities during 2008 and in up to 40 cities through 2009.
